Update on the Honduras Political Crisis

Last Friday, representatives of both Manuel "Mel" Zelaya (or Citizen Mel as I call him) and President Roberto Micheletti signed what is referred to as the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Accord. Basically, it states that Congress will decide if Mel is to be allowed back in power, along with several other bullet points (pun intended). However, for everything to happen, the stars must align with Mars and Pluto and you have to hold your tongue just right...in other words, it's far from a done deal. Pay no attention to the jubilous celebrating that occurred Friday night by the Zelaya supporters. So much could go wrong and things could be worse than before. I believe the problems are far from being solved for Honduras.

Hi,

My name is Roy. You might have seen my comments on La Gringa's blog. I am an American Expat living in Venezuela and as such, I have been following the events in Honduras closely.

Since you are an FSO, can you provide us (or me privately, if you cannot say publicly) with any insights with regard to exactly what the hell happened in the Embassy and why the COM acted in the manner he did?

I can't speak for anyone on my blog but myself. To presume that I know all the facts or what someone else was thinking would be pretty stupid of me. I wish I could help you but I'm really not in a position to comment on what others are thinking. Sorry...

Hi Debi,

So what is going on this week? Has the agreement been broken?

Yellow Flower, Zelaya did not submit names for the new temporary government, as required in the accord. The wording of the accord is being interpreted so many ways. Some say that because he didn't submit names, the accord has been broken. He chose to interpret the accord that he would be reinstated within hours...but Congress is in recess (all are out campaigning) and it's Congress that needs to vote him back. The OAS in Washington is supposed to vote on whether or not to recognize the elections this week. Chavez may have moved on to bigger and better things. Plain and simple..I don't see that much was accomplished by the signing of the accord. Mr. Zelaya has a history of not keeping his word he has shown that now. The majority fear that if he gets his foot in the door, it will be a calamity for this country. Every day is a new day with the potential for anything. Kidnappers released the 81 year old father of the Minister of Defense (who lives across the street from me) so that's very good news. However, yesterday there was an execution style murder of the son of an ex president. And the kidnapped 18 month old baby is still out there somewhere. The far left candidate, Reyes, has pulled out of the running for President. On the bright side, I've heard from so many Hondurans say they are going to vote, no matter what, which is the best news. Hopefully, everything will happen so that the new president will be recognized and this country can get on the road to recovery and stabilization.
